An Architecture Portfolio – Both an iPad and iPhone Version. When finished and published to the App store it will be my first official iPad App.

A Quilting App – Planned to be released in the next few months for the iPad (iPhone planned at a later date). Bringing a unique approach to quilt design this app will allow users to design quilts in a fast and extremely efficient way. From a one click approach, colour matching and being able to create quilts from photos, this is set to be a must have companion App for quilters.

Have you ever wanted a better way to reposition and reorganise your windows on the Mac? Well look no further, Andreas Hegenberg has made available on the Mac App Store an awesome tool that does just that. Introducing, BetterSnapTool.

BetterSnapTool allows you to easily manage your window positions and sizes by either dragging them to one of your screens corners or to the top, left or right side of your screen. This lets you easily maximize your windows, position them side by side or even resize them to quarters of the screen.

BetterSnapTool is a fantastic way to make the most of your screen space on a Mac, particularly when using a larger resolution display and you can’t bare carefully resizing individual windows each and every time you open an App. Just drag your window to your desired position and watch as your window is resized with pixel precision to that section of the screen. Currently BetterSnapTool is rocking a well deserved 5 Stars and has a whole host of customisations for those who like to tinker.

Check out BetterSnapTool – HERE! Priced at $1.99US at the time of writing. While your at it be sure to check out Andreas Hegenberg’s blog @ http://blog.boastr.net/?page_id=2342

In this tutorial we are going to create a custom class that inherits from UIView that you can reuse and add to any project. This is part one and covers the basic setup, in subsequent parts we will evolve it to add more features and make it more useful.

First off, setup a new project or open an existing one. Next you need to add a new file create a new objective-c class and it wants to be a subclass of UIView.

Name it “ScrollerView”.

in the newly created files navigate to the header (.h) file and modify it to look like this.

@interface ScrollerView : UIView{

}
- (void)setScrollingText:(NSString *)string;
- (void)startScrolling:(UILabel *)label;

@end

The method signatures in the header file indicate the methods we will use in the implementation file. So first off add the 2 empty methods to the .m file at some point before @end.

- (void)setScrollingText:(NSString *)string{

}
- (void)startScrolling:(UILabel *)label{

}

Ok. so your new class has its basic skeleton, now we can start fleshing it out. Add the following to the setScrollingText: Method in the implementation file.

	UILabel *scrollingLabel = [[UILabel alloc] init];
	[scrollingLabel setBackgroundColor:[UIColor clearColor]];
	[scrollingLabel setFont:[UIFont fontWithName:@"Helvetica" size:self.frame.size.height / 2]];
	[scrollingLabel setText:string];
	[scrollingLabel sizeToFit];
	[self addSubview:scrollingLabel];

This is just some basic setup to add a label to the view and customise it. Feel free to play around with this at the end of the tutorial.

In preparation for scrolling the text along the screen we are going to position it off the side of the view, to do that add the following towards the bottom of the setScrollingText: method.

	[scrollingLabel setFrame:CGRectMake(self.frame.size.width, self.frame.origin.y, scrollingLabel.frame.size.width, scrollingLabel.frame.size.height)];

The final part of the setScrollingText: method is to pass the label we created to another method in order to animate it along the screen. This is done by adding the following below the previous line.

	[self startScrolling:scrollingLabel];

Ok, thats the end of the setScrollingText: method, we don’t need to visit again this tutorial, move over to the startScrolling: method, here we are going to handle the moving of the label over the screen.

add the following;

	float duration = (label.frame.size.width + self.frame.size.width)/111;

Here we dynamically set the duration of the animation for moving the label over the screen. If we were to set it so a constant value instead, the smaller labels will move across the screen faster than the larger ones. To alter the speed, just change the value to 111, once you have finished the tutorial you can play around with this value to see hos the speed changes.

Now, the bit that does the magic, animations. simple yet effective. All the code you need is below and should be placed just after the previous line.

	[UIView beginAnimations:nil context:nil];
	[UIView setAnimationDuration:duration];
	[UIView setAnimationCurve:UIViewAnimationCurveLinear];
	[UIView setAnimationRepeatCount:999];

	[label setFrame:CGRectMake(0-label.frame.size.width, label.frame.origin.y, label.frame.size.width, label.frame.size.height)];

	[UIView commitAnimations];

Your custom class is almost complete you just need to make sure that when your label is outside the bounds of the custom class it appears hidden. this is achieved by adding the following to the initWithFrame: of the custom class.

		[self setClipsToBounds:YES];

For an overview, the custom class header file should look like;

#import <UIKit/UIKit.h>

@interface ScrollerView : UIView{

}

- (void)setScrollingText:(NSString *)string;
- (void)startScrolling:(UILabel *)label;

@end

and the corresponding implementation file should look like;

#import "ScrollerView.h"

@implementation ScrollerView

- (id)initWithFrame:(CGRect)frame
{
    self = [super initWithFrame:frame];
    if (self) {

		[self setClipsToBounds:YES];
    }
    return self;
}

- (void)setScrollingText:(NSString *)string{

	UILabel *scrollingLabel = [[UILabel alloc] init];
	[scrollingLabel setBackgroundColor:[UIColor clearColor]];
	[scrollingLabel setFont:[UIFont fontWithName:@"Helvetica" size:self.frame.size.height / 2]];
	[scrollingLabel setText:string];
	[scrollingLabel sizeToFit];
	[self addSubview:scrollingLabel];

	[scrollingLabel setFrame:CGRectMake(self.frame.size.width, self.frame.origin.y, scrollingLabel.frame.size.width, scrollingLabel.frame.size.height)];

	[self startScrolling:scrollingLabel];
}

- (void)startScrolling:(UILabel *)label{

	float duration = (label.frame.size.width + self.frame.size.width)/111;

	[UIView beginAnimations:nil context:nil];
	[UIView setAnimationDuration:duration];
	[UIView setAnimationCurve:UIViewAnimationCurveLinear];
	[UIView setAnimationRepeatCount:999];

	[label setFrame:CGRectMake(0-label.frame.size.width, label.frame.origin.y, label.frame.size.width, label.frame.size.height)];

	[UIView commitAnimations];
}

@end

Now you have your brand spanking new custom class. how do you make it work in your App? follow these simple steps;

1) import the header file in your viewController

#import "ScrollerView.h"

2) Add the following to your viewDidLoad method (or wherever you want the new class to be)

	ScrollerView *scrollerView = [[ScrollerView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 320, 20)];
	[self.view addSubview:scrollerView];
	[scrollerView setScrollingText:@"Hello World"];

Thats it. you can change the size and location here to wherever you like and change the text to what you want.

Whats next? Adding delegates and randomly changing the text being displayed from an array of options. COMING SOON!

On occasions you will want to generate a random number; you might have found your way here because you don’t know where to start, or maybe you have found that the random numbers you are generating are not as random as you expected. Well your in the right place. One place i often use my randomly generated numbers is to randomly select an item from an array.

The answer is simply 1 line, you can then use your variable randomNumber wherever you need.

int randomNumber = arc4random() % 4;

The result from the previous code will be to produce a random number from 0 – 3.

If you want to check your code is working, you can add this loop to your code to print out a list of 100 randomly generated numbers.

for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) {

        int randomNumber = arc4random()%4;
        NSLog(@"%d",randomNumber );

}

Yesterday I set out to rework my Cracking Pictures iPhone App. As much as i like it, i think it can be so much better. In my last update i added some enhanced cracks which gave better realism to the pictures taken, but, I wanted MORE! So, I asked myself what could i do to enhance my App? Make it more accessible and easier to use? Well, below is a list of the features i plan on adding or updating this week.

Primary Updates

Pinch to Zoom for the on screen cracks.

Slide to Move the cracks.

Redesigned user interface.

Option to Share photo to Facebook or Twitter.

Option to Email to a friend.

Speed up time taken to change between crack sets.

Secondary Updates (May not make next update depending on time)

Extra Cracks (New crack sets)

Add a news feed

Add audio “Crack” for when you take a picture

Store the last taken picture for quick access to share.

Also, if anyone has any recommendations, feel free to ask.
